Every January 1st in Southern California, the Tournament of Roses Parade is here to officially ring in the new year. This is the 130th Rose Parade and the Grand Marshall this year is the only and only music legend Chaka Khan. Marvel at beautifully decorated floats all made of flowers and natural materials. Enjoy marching bands, equestrian acts, drill teams, and other special performers. Check your local tv stations for viewing information so you can relax and watch it at home. Tried and true, the Los Angeles County holiday celebration at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion is an ideal way to celebrate Christmas eve afternoon. This jam-packed 3 hour production has everything. Enjoy holiday instrumental music, choral music, dance performances and more. This free event offers the city of Los Angeles a special holiday experience. It will also be broadcast live on PBS and live streamed on pbssocal.org if you can’t make it in person.
Yes, you can have awe-inspiring fireworks in December! Enjoy this unique holiday version of a traditional fireworks show as well as ocean breezes in Manhattan Beach on December 9. It overlooks the pier so wear a heavy coat or snuggle up with blankets. There will be live jazz and Dixieland music, a Skechers Snow Park and Sled Hill, Santa Float, holiday singalongs, and more. Make sure to bring a new, unwrapped toy for the toy drive! This festive event takes place between 4-7pm.
Experience one of our favorite traditions in LA! The annual Hollywood Christmas Parade ushers in the official start of the holiday season. Enjoy a feast of festive sight and sound with decorated floats, marching bands, equestrian groups, celebrities, giant balloons, and lots of cheering attendees. It takes place on November 25 at 6pm. It starts at Orange Drive and goes east on iconic Hollywood Blvd., south on Vine, and west on Sunset Blvd. The Grand Marshal is Nancy O’Dell with hosts Erik Estrada, Dean Cain, Montel Williams, Laura McKenzie and more.
Immerse yourself in Native American culture at the largest Native American arts fair in Southern California. Held at The Autry, the American Indian Arts Marketplace has a dazzling array of culture and creativity. It features more than 200 Native American artists from 40 nations. You’ll find a wide variety of items to purchase including paintings, pottery, textiles, wood carvings, beadwork, photography, basketry, mixed media and more. There will also be artist demos, activities for the kids, and lots of tasty food. The Autry celebrates the American West in all of its forms. Whether you are an artist, writer, or just a fan, seeing original art in person reveals such depth and emotion to the work. The Hammer has some new exhibits that are very compelling. All exhibits here are FREE to the public. For added insight, opt for a guided tour on Saturdays at 1pm. They also have group tours. In addition to art, The Hammer also has musical performances, speakers, poetry readings, kids’ programs, and screenings.

Burbank is the Martial Arts Museum. It’s the perfect place to learn about the martial arts from all over Asia including China, Korea, Thailand, The Philippines, and Japan. Learn the history, philosophy, and traditions of martial arts. It also explores the history of anime as well. You can even see the Karate Kid’s actual headband, Mortal Kombat shield, Samurai collections and more. Looking for add volunteering to your life? Being a volunteer adds a very meaningful and mindful component to your wellbeing and others. Special Olympics Southern California is a wonderful and enthusiastic organization that has been celebrated for decades. It’s a real feel good atmosphere. There are events throughout the year in So Cal where volunteers are welcomed and needed. Helping these amazing athletes reach new heights is one of the best things in life. The Special Olympics was founded in 1968 by Sargent and Eunice Shriver. Since then, it has grown and thrived and brought accomplishment and joy to so many people.
Watching movies is fun. Watching movies outside is even more fun. On September 15, only a short drive from NoHo Senior Arts Colony, enjoy a screening of A League of Their Own with the largest inflatable movie screen on the west coast (plus it’s 100% dog-friendly!) There will be food trucks and live music. It will take place at the North Hollywood Recreation Center located at 11430 Chandler Blvd. in North Hollywood 91601. The movie stars Tom Hanks, Gena Davis, Rosie O’Donnell, Jon Lovitz, and Madonna. Learn about the real women who inspired this movie.
On September 16, experience the world’s largest and longest running Mexican Independence Day Parades! The East L.A. Mexican Independence Day Parade begins at 10:30 at E. Cesar Chavez & N. Mednik Avenues. It’s been thriving for over 7 decades and this year’s parade keeps the fun going. There will be colorful and creative floats, marching bands, drill teams, and more. After the parade, a fun festival will take place that includes live Mariachi music, cultural dancing, original art, and of course, tasty food. FREE.

Living in Southern California gives us a chance to experience so much international culture close to home! The Festival of the Chariots (Ratha Yatra) is a colorful and unique festival dating back some 5,000 years. It began in India. Venice is place for this incredibly popular festival in Southern California. It will feature three chariots, one for each of the three deities; Lord Jagannatha, Lord Balarama and Lady Subhadra. The canopied chariots are decorated with flowers and balloons and are pulled with long, thick ropes by hundreds of people who ecstatically dance while chanting sacred mantras. It is a time-honored and joyous celebration of life and glorification of God.
