Opening Day of California Continued @ the Autry

One of the most beautiful and thoughtful museums around is the Autry Museum of the American West.  October 9 is the opening of ‘California Continued’ — how traditional ecological knowledge gained through centuries of experience can help present-day residents understand and care for the California environment.

Opening Day Activities
11:00 a.m.–4:00 p.m. Native Plant Sale
Outside on the Autry Plaza, shop from a variety of native plants from Hahamongna Cooperative Nursery

1:00 and 3:00 p.m. Toveema–Carmelo Family Singers and Dancers (Gabrielino/Tongva)

1:00-4:00 p.m.: Basketry and Cultural Material Demonstrations
With Virginia Carmelo and Lazaro Arvizu (Gabrielino/Tongva)

1:00, 2:00, 3:00, and 4:00 p.m.: Acorn Demonstrations
Join cultural educator Tima Lotah Link (Shmuwich Chumash) under the garden’s oak tree for a demonstration on the wonders of acorns: food, dye, medicine, and fun! Watch acorn being winnowed in the breeze, try your skills at pounding acorn, and discover items made from acorns.

2:00 p.m.: Cahuilla Bird Singers
Led by Cahuilla/Serrano elder Kim Marcus and son Raymond Marcus, Fernandeno Tataviam Tribal President Rudy Ortega, Jr., and Ray Rivera (Yaqui,Pima, Tataviam)
